Haritaki is a herbaceous plant used in many ayurvedic preparations. It is said that Haritaki was created when a drop of amrita (eternal nectar) fell from the heavens. Hara is another name for Lord Shiva, a Hindu deity worshiped as the destroyer and restorer of worlds. Haritaki is useful in ‘destroying diseases’ and ‘restoring the body’ - a rasayana (rejuvenative) herb that is triodosha i.e. balances all three doshas; pitta, kapha and vata.
This herb is also considered an adaptogen that works on a nonspecific basis to normalise physiological function and an antioxidant that can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to the body. The Haritaki herb is always very popular because the positive effect it has on the hair, skin, eyes and liver. It is known to inhibit growths.
